The Hagia Sofya
Given the amount of time I spent there and how I felt about it, it's only right that I devote an entire post to this city.

The road to Bulgaria

Broken down in Bulgaria. The sign shows just how close we got.
4000 km isn't bad. Just 200 km from my aim of Sofia, literally a few metres past the Bulgarian customs, the car gave up.

Wet and western Europe

Leaving the UK.
First on-the-road entry! Ten days down and so far we've made it to Hungary. I say we because I was joined by two Aussies, whom I'll refer to as R and B for the sake of anonymity and because it makes it sound like I'm travelling with an actual genre of music. Which I'm not: mostly Gary Newman and other car-related singers are keeping us entertained.

I'm off!

The last picture I took, at New Year's Eve. Yes that is blue sauce. No this picture does no make sense.
Bags are packed, car is fed and watered. I'm off!

Just a reminder: I'm driving through Europe, then dumping the car in Bulgaria or somewhere, then pretty much following the Silk Road and further afield. Eventually I'll get to Oz and NZ before flying to South America. Whoop!

I never did get my Turkmen visa so I'll have to get it en route, but I have one for Iran (yey!), Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and India. That'll save me a bit of time on the road, at least.

So, a quick hop from Dover to Calais, then a stop somewhere in France, perhaps Reims.

Goodbye England!
